18 22 26 April Running Info…

April 18, 2013February 28, 2016

Hello Runners,
How about this sunshine???? I brought it back from Italy with me. You can thank me whenever we see each other. We have a fun week planned starting with the London marathon tomorrow (yes, that’s fun). A group of us are meeting at the SJW tube station at 10:30am wearing our pink Bratislava caps. Join us - even if it’s just for the first “sighting”. It’s a fun atmosphere down there and watching the race is very inspiring. WARNING - When you see thousands of people running a full marathon, you might be tempted to sign up for one yourself. The London marathon runners will be recognizing the victims of the Boston bombings by observing a moment of silence before the race, wearing black ribbons, and crossing their arms across their chests as they finish the race. One of our runners sent an email saying “...after the horrors of the bombings at the Boston Marathon, this marathon has taken on a special meaning for all of us
participating”.  I couldn’t agree more - I think it will be a remarkable day.
The following Sunday, 28 April, we have several ladies running the Stratford-on-Avon marathon. I’m hoping to go see that one too (I’m too lazy to run but I love being a spectator). The train schedule to Stratford-upon-Avon isn’t convenient so I may either drive up there or take a train from Marylebone at 8:15 to Warwick and then a taxi to Stratford. Let me know if you’re interested. It will be a full day out. The drive or train ride is about 2 hours each way.
We are celebrating April birthdays this Friday with cupcakes after the run. I missed Michelle Guralnick (14th April) on the list I sent out last week and there may be others who I overlooked. I’ll work on updating the birthday list this week.

Routes this Week

Monday, 22 April
On Monday, we’ll do a loop so we can get back to Starbucks and toast the London marathon runners.
A big ‘ol loop (7 miles) – Selfishly, I’d love to get back to Starbucks so we can celebrate with our friends who ran the London marathon. I tried to make the loop interesting. We’ll see. The route heads out the canal at Little Venice, then over the canal heading down towards Paddington. At Lancaster Gate, we’ll enter Hyde Park and run along the water’s edge then carry on to Wellington Arch. We’ll run the northern edge of Green Park then start heading back to SJW through Mayfair. The exact streets are not important - just head north then everyone will meet up at Starbucks. Stratford-on-Avon marathon runners, some of you have 8 miles on your schedule. If you want that extra mile, do a loop in Regents Park to bump up the distance.

Tuesday, 16 April
The ex-beginners will be doing a 45-60 minute run - route of their choice.

Wednesday, 24 April
Happening Bagel Bakery (6.5 miles) - The pursuit for the world’s best bagels continues.... This time we’ll try the Happening Bagel Bakery in Finsbury Park. I’ve never been there but I’ve heard it’s top-notch. The routeis gorgeous - I love this one. We’ll head up to Hampstead then run on to Highgate (it’s a lot of uphill running but it’s worth it!!!). In Highgate, we’ll drop down to the Finsbury greenbelt and run east across to Finsbury Park. Once we’re in the park, we’ll head south to Seven Sisters Rd to finish at the bagel shop. I’m not sure about coffee in the area but we’ll find something. If anyone knows of a good coffee shop up there, let me know. In fact, if you know of any good coffee shops, bakeries, bagel stores, etc - let me know. I’ll plan some interesting routes to get us there over the next few weeks.

Thursday, 25 April
Yay! It’s hill running class time. We’ll practice several hills and get some pointers along the way. MWF runners - feel free to join us if you think you need tips on running hills.
On Fridays, the MWF group heads up Fitzjohns to Hampstead. From there, some of of the runners cut over into the heath on Flask/Well Walk and some head up to enter the heath from Spaniard’s Rd. It’s important that we can run Fitzjohns to comfortably join the MWF group, so we’ll start with that. From there, we’ll probably cut across Flask Walk to the heath. Once we’re in the heath, we’ll play it by ear - if people want to do a steeper hill, we’ll run up Parliament Hill. We will head back to SJW through Belsize Park. You could either take a tube/bus home from Swiss Cottage or run back to Starbucks. Bring your Oyster card and some money so you have options. The route will be some version of this map:

Friday, 26 April
It’s time to celebrate our April birthdays with cupcakes after the run. We should be back to Starbucks around 9:30.
Our ladies running the Stratford-on-Avon marathon will be running a flat, 4 mile route. Others may also prefer to stay flat after running the hill on Wed to the Happening Bagel Shop in Finsbury. The marathoners could start with the group and head back to Starbucks from Warren St. tube station. The rest of the group could continue the loop down to Mortimer St., across to Baker St. and back to Starbucks via Regents Park. I’ll probably do the flat route but don’t let me stop you from running the heath!!!!

                                                             Happy Running,
